Embracing Wabi-Sabi: Finding Perfection in Imperfection
by Deanne McBride

As an interior designer, I constantly seek ways to blend beauty and functionality, and my latest project has provided the perfect canvas to explore the Wabi-Sabi trend. Wabi-Sabi, a Japanese aesthetic philosophy, celebrates the beauty of imperfection, impermanence, and the natural cycle of growth and decay. It teaches us to find charm in the rustic, the worn, and the understated.

Recently, we began revamping a home originally designed by George de Haas, built in 2005. The house features stunning natural wood elements, with proportions that are timeless. However, the fabrics had become dated, presenting an opportunity to breathe new life into this beautiful space.

Inspired by Wabi-Sabi, we decided to embrace the natural imperfections and textures within the home. We plan to lighten the dark wood pieces to a rich, warm brown, highlighting the grain and character of the wood. Natural textures like grass wallpapers, boucle fabrics, and light prints will be integrated to create a harmonious, serene environment.

The original sandstone tiles will be sanded down to reveal their natural color, whilst the walls and ceilings will be painted in lighter tones to enhance the sense of space and tranquility. Additionally, the lighting will be completely redone. We’ll offer alternative lighting circuits, incorporating downlighters and indirect lighting options to create versatile moods throughout the home.

Wabi-Sabi is not just a trend but a mindset—finding beauty in the imperfect, valuing simplicity, and connecting with nature. Through this project, we aim to create a space that embodies these principles, providing a serene and timeless retreat.
